Dirty Monk, Belgian Rye IPA

Cool Springs Brew: Dirty Monk

This beer has roots in my love for Belgian beers. It was inspired from some of my favorite Belgian IPA’s like Houblon chouff, Raging Bitch, Cali-Belgique, and Green Flash La Freak. My little spin is to include 4 different rye malts and hops to accentuate the rye spice characteristic. This Rye forward IPA is a change of pace from my last hoppy release, the APA. Dirty Monk has a much more complex profile for what I like to call quantum beer physics. It will challenge your palate, and make you reflect on the meaning of life.

Style – Belgian Rye IPA
IBUís – 55
ABV – 6.2%
Hops – Warrior, Amarillo, Saaz
Malts – 2 Row, Rye Malt, Rye Flaked, Crystal Rye, Chocolate Rye, Munich malt, Brown malt, Crystal 60

Appearance – Murky walnut brown with a light brown creamy head

Smell – a Complex blend of dark bread malt, mild resin hop and a sweet Belgian yeast with notes of molasses, rye, ginger, dark fruit, mild nuttiness and a hint of alcohol.

Taste – The flavor begins sweet and chewy with a hint of molasses and toffee. Light fruit from the Belgian yeast strain makes a short blip but a significant amount of spiciness from the rye makes its presence known. The finish has a touch of dark roasted coffee. Just when you don’t think this beer has any hops to it, the 55 IBU’s kick in to add to the complexity. The essence of the Rye and Amarillo hops sticks around for a lingering profile.

Mouth feel – Medium in body and creamy in texture with a strong carbonation.
