Chris Ray and Elle Bijet (Pronounced L-Bee-Zjay) met in June of 2009 at Nashville's famous Bluebird Cafe, during an open mic night. After initially becoming friends, the pair started dating after writing their first song together (Better on the Inside). Since getting married in the summer of 2011, the couple has continued to make better music, play out, and meet people in Nashville and beyond.
Their unique sound blends many different genres of music, such as Elle's jazz-inspired vocals, soaring male/female harmonies, and Chris' percussive finger-style acoustic guitar. Playing live is one of Chris and Elle's passions, and listeners of any age will appreciate the intricate dynamics of the music and show.

With only a single guitar and two dynamic voices, The Rooted Wings showcases various styles targeted to each unique audience. It is truly rare that a musical act can cover music from mutiple genres so faithfully while maintaining its own individual character. The Rooted Wings' original music reflects the diversity of their cover material. From the New Classic Music for Tomorrow Music Review on The Rooted Wings' self-titled album, "They have a myriad of influences floating through their music. However, none of those influences comes out as anything but the sound of The Rooted Wings.". The Rooted Wings is Samantha Hawkins and John Winters. Samantha is originally from Austin, Texas, John was born in Nashville, Tennessee. Aside from representing two different cities known for music, their stories are somewhat similar. They both ended up in Clarksville, Tennessee, both studied music performance privately from an early age, both are alumni of Austin Peay State University, and both were performing in the same venues. It was inevitable that they would eventually meet. After a few open mic collaborations, they knew they had something great together. The Rooted Wings was born. Since then, they have been entertaining audiences everywhere they go.
